New poker variants explained

New poker variants change the deck, the pace or the opponents. Six Plus Hold'em removes the 2s to 5s, fast-fold poker moves you to a new table every hand, and house-banked games such as Casino Hold'em put you against the dealer.

Each change shifts strategy. Learn the rules and the hand rankings of a variant before you play it for money.

Six Plus Hold'em

Played with a 36-card deck (6s to aces). With fewer cards, a flush is harder to make than a full house, so in most rule sets a flush beats a full house, and many rooms rank three of a kind above a straight. Hands run closer, and drawing hands gain value.

Fast-fold poker

After you fold, you go straight to a new table and a new hand. You play many more hands per hour, so play tighter, especially out of position, and set a hand or time limit.

Casino poker against the house

Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud are not played against other players. The paytable decides the return; see the poker page for the figures.

Adapting to any variant

  • Read the hand rankings for that variant.
  • Start at the lowest stakes.
  • Use play-money tables or demos.
  • Keep a separate poker bankroll of at least 20 to 30 buy-ins for cash games.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 18+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

18+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 18 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.
