5 tips for staying in control at new online casinos

A new casino has a large welcome offer and a fresh lobby, and no history to judge it by. That puts more weight on the limits you set yourself: on money, on time and on when to stop.

The five habits below take little effort. They work best when you set them before your first deposit.

1. Set a budget before the first deposit

Decide a monthly amount in cedis you can lose without affecting rent, food, school fees or savings, and set it as a deposit limit in the account. Treat it as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.

2. Know the game

Read the rules and the RTP before you play. A game you understand is easier to stop. Our guide to choosing a game compares the main ones.

3. Manage your time

  • Set a session reminder in the account or on your phone.
  • Take a break every 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Do not play when tired, upset or after drinking.

4. Use the account tools

Deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion are in the account menu at most casinos. Self-exclusion at one casino does not cover others, so close accounts you no longer use.

5. Look honestly at wins and losses

Check your transaction history every month. If you are chasing losses, hiding play or borrowing to play, stop and talk to someone; our addiction help page lists free support.

Why set a budget?

It caps what you can lose and makes it easier to stop.

What should I know before I play a game?

Its rules, its RTP or house edge and how fast it plays.

What are warning signs of a problem?

Chasing losses, borrowing to play, hiding it from family and playing to escape problems. See our addiction help page.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 18+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

18+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 18 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.

New brands

Start small with an unknown casino

Deposit an amount you would accept losing to a failed withdrawal, and request a small cash-out early to see how the casino handles it.

Set limits before the welcome offer
